USBL (Ultra Short Baseline)

Trackpoint II Plus ORE

Trackpoint II Plus is an acoustic positioning system. The USBL (ultra-short baseline) is an underwater acoustic positioning​​ system. It consists of a transceiver (hydrophone) mounted on a pole under a ship and a transponder, or responder, on the seafloor, on a towfish, or on an ROV. A computer, or "topside unit", is used to calculate a position from the ranges and bearings measured by the transceiver.

An acoustic pulse is transmitted by the transceiver and detected by the subsea transponder, which replies with its own acoustic pulse. This return pulse is detected by the shipboard transceiver. The time from the transmission of the​​ initial acoustic pulse until the reply is detected by the USBL system and is converted into a range. To calculate a subsea position, the USBL calculates both a range and an angle from the transceiver to the subsea beacon. Angles​​ are measured by the transceiver, which contains an array of transducers. The transceiver head normally contains three or more transducers separated by a baseline of 10 cm or less. A method called “phase-differencing” within this transducer array is used to calculate the direction to the subsea transponder.

Trackpoint II Plus ORE​​ accuracy is +/- 1m., its resolution 0.3 m and its range is 1000m.

Navigation Software​​ for underwater survey​​ 

For the purposes of this project two (2) relevant software will be used: (1) Tsunamis 99 and (2) Open CPN.

 

Tsunamis 99​​ from Transas Marine is a navigation software used for the production of high-fidelity nautical maps with up to​​ fifty (50) zoom-in/out levels.

 

Open CPN​​ is a Chart Plotter and Navigational software program for use underway or as a planning tool. Among other things, it can be used as a plotter printing software or as a design tool. Key features of the Open CPN supports the following chart formats: Worldwide standard S57 and encrypted S63 vector chart support, BSB v3 and earlier raster charts, MBTiles chartsets,​​ up-to-date ENCs for selected worldwide regions.

 

SIDE SCAN SONAR

Compact, lightweight, easy to deploy, designed for a wide range of seabed surveys and inspection duties.​​ 

provides detailed depictions regardless of water clarity.​​ 

The 325kHz frequency has a maximum operational range of 200m on each side.​​ 

It combines the latest digital sonar electronics with industry leading transducer and digital CHIRP signal processing techniques to dramatically improve range resolution and generate sonar images of unprecedented clarity.
